Vinyl transfer / needle-drop dual-path phase: deck L/R vs secondary capture, room, and ADC fold

Deck L/R captures feel rich in the booth and on monitoring headphones. On digitization mono fold or archival print, body, groove, and midrange often thin or cancel against a secondary capture, room mic, or alternate ADC path that carries the same vinyl a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between deck and secondary path, plus a stereo needle-drop bed that was never folded before archive. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo vinyl beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a vinyl denoiser, not a widener, and not a substitute for path priority or mono audition of the archive bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What vinyl / needle-drop phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the archive / transfer bus (not only booth headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B deck muted vs open under secondary capture/room/ADC. Note what disappears: body, groove, midrange, transient bite.
  3. Solo pairs: deck L vs secondary, vinyl vs room, stereo needle-drop vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with deck muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between deck L/R and secondary capture / room / ADC

Flip deck vs secondary, or vinyl vs room, when body or groove return immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: bass DI + amp, field dual recorder.

2. Small delay align secondary to the hero deck image

Secondary USB/ADC or room paths often arrive later (or earlier) than the phono path. A few samples of delay on the secondary (or nudge to the hero deck image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero vinyl image to the archive bus

Do not sum deck, secondary capture, room, and alternate ADC all hot into the transfer. Pick a hero image (usually the main phono/deck path), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on mono fold. Related: stem bus delivery.

4. Prefer hero deck as the body; quieter color secondary

The secondary should color ambience or backup redundancy, not replace the hero deck for the archive. If the secondary sits at full level under a loud deck, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull the secondary first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on vinyl beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low end and groove centered for archive and mono delivery.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo needle-drop bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Transfer / digitization checklist (to archive)

1. Label deck vs secondary vs room vs ADC paths

Name phono/deck, secondary capture, room, and alternate ADC so operators know what hits the archive. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check archive bus alone, then with full vinyl

Solo body and groove in mono. Then open midrange and transient bite in mono. Note fights between secondary color and hero deck.

3. Watch phone, social, and mono archival destinations

Many delivery paths hear mono or near-mono. Guides: master bus mono, broadcast / radio mono.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before print

Host-agnostic habit before you archive or deliver: DAW null-test + mono-check.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo archive bus in mono → polarity deck vs secondary/room/ADC → delay-align secondary → one hero deck image → quieter secondary under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full vinyl → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a needle-drop bed → fold again for archive / mono delivery.
